Emergency Coaching

Recently, I was called in at short notice to interview members of the sales teams in a major media company, which was changing from a linear to a matrix management system.

Prior to this engagement, I had worked with a global IT corporation providing business network solutions following a similar restructure, so I had plenty of in-depth experience in this field of coaching.

Matrix management brings many benefits to an organisation, as well as plenty of challenges.

The interviews were conducted within a competency framework, as employees were being interviewed for promotion or alternative roles that the restructure had created.

So, what does a sales team need or expect from a coach providing this type of rapid intervention?

  • Lots of practical help, e.g. how to make the résumé attractive, ordered, relevant and reflective of the holder’s experience.
  • Guidance in honing interview skills; all the candidates are highly competent, knowledgeable, conscientious and wholly committed to the company but they need reminding how able they are.
  • Relief of the strain, by helping the applicant to take a step back, reflect with a detached perspective on the present situation and the future before deciding upon the best approach.

In most cases, it had been a number of years since their previous interview experience and the need to re-apply for a new position, particularly when one feels safe and comfortable in the present role, can be demanding and stressful.

From the feedback we received, the team found the 90 minute session with a professional coach not only therapeutic, but enormously helpful.

They reported that ‘time to do nothing but focus on myself’ was motivating and enlightening.

One of the coachees called my involvement: Coaching 101

I liked the term, but was unsure what was actually meant?

However, it made me wonder how short-term, prescriptive coaching, as described above, could prove an efficient, fruitful and cost-effective corporate resource.
